Mathematical genius Physicist, Philosopher and metaphysician Pythagoras or Pythagoras, known as the ‘Father of Numbers’, Greek Astronomer and Mathematician Aristarchus or Arístarchos, known for the belief in heliocentrism, which puts the sun, not the earth, at the centre of the universe, and the Greek philosopher Epicurus, the creator of the idea of Epicurism, Samos Island, Greek name Samos Island. Located just across the Dilek Peninsula and Kusadasi in the Aegean Sea, this island draws attention as the closest Greek island to Turkey. It is one of the most preferred Greek islands by Turks.
Speaking of Pythagoras, in the harbour of Pythagorion, you can find a statue showing the Pythagorean rule (the Pythagorean relation allows us to find the length of the third side given the length of two sides of a right triangle) and the Cup of Justice, which Pythagoras designed in a different way in most parts of the island.

The statue of the famous mathematician Pythagoras in the harbour of Pythagorion, describing the Pythagorean Rule.

Pythagoras, who lived between 580 BC and 496 BC, invented the cup of justice 2,500 years ago. The famous mathematician hid an interesting feature in this bell-shaped cup.

Pythagoras designed the cup with six holes and the water inside does not spill. Whenever the liquid filled into the cup exceeds the limit line, then the contents spill to the last drop.

The philosopher, who wanted to draw attention to greedy people, named this invention the cup of justice.

This interesting feature of the justice cup gives the following message: ‘'He who is not satisfied with little cannot find much.''

Pythagorion

Pythagorion, which attracts attention as one of the most beautiful places on the island of Samos, was called Tigani until 1955, and after 1955 it was named Pythagorion, which is its current name to honour the famous mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. Pythagorion Port, built during the reign of Tyrant Polycrates, is known as the first man-made port of the Mediterranean. To the southwest of the harbour in 1824, Lykurgos Logotheis built the 400 metre long Lykurgos castle to protect the island from the Turkish navy. Although the castle has succumbed to time and some parts have been destroyed, there are ruins from the Byzantine and Roman periods and also a museum. The island of Pythagorion is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Pythagoras' Cave

The cave, also known as the Cave of Pythagaros, is located at the foot of Mount Kerkis, the highest mountain in the Aegean, in the western part of Samos Island.According to the story, Pythagoras, one of the world's most famous philosophers and mathematicians, was confronted by Polistaris, known as the tyrant of Samos, in religious and political conflicts and took refuge in this cave to avoid arrest. Just above the cave there is a small chapel reached by stairs: It was built by Saint Paul Latrinos, who devoted himself to religious affairs in deference to the Virgin Mary. After seeing the signboard of the cave, you can reach the cave and the chapel after going on a dirt road for about 4 km and leaving your car at the last point and climbing 300 metres.

Virgin Mary Cave Monastery

The monastery of the Grotto of the Virgin Mary (also known as the Monastery of Panagia Spiliani) is located in the north-west of Mount Kerkis, about 1000 metres above sea level. There is also the Monastery of the Holy Spirit next to the Monastery of the Grotto of the Virgin Mary. The Monastery of the Grotto of the Virgin Mary, located at the foot of Mount Kerkis in the back of the Pythagorion Region, was dedicated to Agios Gerios in 1586.Inside the cave there is a church of the Virgin Mary and holy water. The monastery is frequently visited by women who want a child, especially by women who want a child. There are rumours that women who cannot have a baby have their desires when they pray and light candles here. Although both caves are in a ruined state, there are paintings made on the cave walls.

Temple of Hera (Heraion)

This magnificent temple is located about 8 km from Pythagorion and west of Pythagorion. The construction of this historical building is known to date back to 570 BC.The Temple of Hera, known as the largest Greek temple ever built, is 80 metres long by 45 metres wide and has more than 100 columns. During the Persian War, which lasted for many years, a large part of the temple was destroyed. Monalates Village

Manolates is one of the most well-known touristic villages of Samos. It is famous for its wine, ceramics, artists and delicious food. You can find souvenir shops and rakus in all the streets of the village. When two-thirds of Samosans originate from Western Anatolia, it is not strange that they are close to Turks. One of the villages that embraces people with love is Manolates, the village of artists who design ceramics and jewellery.

Manolates is a village built on the side of Samos facing Seferihisar, that is, on the mountain to the north. You reach the village after a steep road winding through the plane tree forest on the mountain side.
No vehicles enter the village. There is no bus either. Those who come to the village with small vehicles are welcomed by two modest restaurants just opposite the car park. A surprise awaits you at every corner of your village tour, which will continue with slopes in places and stairs in places.Giorgos's first ceramic workshop of the village, where you get the feeling that you are looking at the Gümüldür coast from the plane... When Giorgos realises that you are Turkish, he greets you with a few Turkish words. The view of the valley from the windows of his workshop, where he forms a ball of love with his cats, is marvellous. The softness in the eyes of the elderly villagers sitting on the terraces of their small but charming houses makes you feel the power of love and friendship.  The village square, which you reach by a few stairs, is tiny. Two ceramic shops, two taverns and a jewellery design workshop open their doors here.

The youngest family member is Manuella, who learnt the art of ceramics from her grandparents who migrated to Samos from Sivrihisar, Eskişehir. She is a chemical engineer but due to the crisis in Greece she cannot do her job. Although her grandmother is 85 years old, she paints the ceramic plates, vases and justice mugs that her daughters produce on the lathe with amazing dexterity. Yannis, the father, produces elegant paper bags for the products sold. At the same time, he is learning Turkish in order to communicate with the Turkish visitors.

We recommend that you do not return to Manolates without stopping by Lukas' Taverna and watching the cypress forest, the valley below and the sea. Lukas Taverna is almost on the roof of the village, which is a must for those who come to this village. Do not be so intimidated. After a pleasant 15-20 minute walk, all your tiredness will evaporate with a coffee you will drink at this point.

Since there is no regular transport to the village, you can reach it either with your rented car or by a taxi from Kokkari. Don't come to Samos and don't return without visiting Manolates.
